A Look Back: When Gainesville’s Christmas Parade Featured Real Reindeer |
The Cooke County Library shared a charming piece of local history this week, and we had to pass it along. Back in 1950, kiddos watching the Gainesville Christmas Parade were treated to something truly magical β real, fresh-from-the-Arctic reindeer pulling Santaβs rubber-tired sleigh down the streets of downtown. For many families, it was the very first time they had ever seen a reindeer in real life, and the excitement was unforgettable. According to an old βTown Topicsβ column, the reindeer were part of a traveling Christmas unit that made a whirlwind tour across Texas and Louisiana. The handlers described long overnight drives, quick feedings, and even a few stubborn reindeer moments as Santaβs team learned the parade route. Despite the chaos, the animals stole the show β and the hearts of Gainesville spectators. As we prepare for this yearβs parade, itβs fun to remember how traditions have evolved over the past 91 years. While Santa may ride in on a fire truck now, the spirit of wonder remains the same. A sweet reminder that Gainesville has always known how to make the season magical. β€οΈπ β¨ |
